Continuous Improvement

State-of-the-art CNC Machinery & Tooling Systems

CI is a huge part of SPE. As a company we are always striving to invest in tomorrow today. Being comfortable with the norm is not who we are. Redefining existing processes and making the impossible possible is part of our DNA.

Some examples of this are:

  • State of the art tooling systems are continuously researched to enable projects to be as fast, consistent and cost effective as possible.
  • New cutting-edge CNC machinery investment.
  • Innovative fixturing equipment that saves on time and provides accurate set ups.
  • Automated cells so operators can multi-man machines and increase production.
  • Robotic cells that once set, run themselves which makes sure production carries on 24/7 even though small batch quantities and not in a high repetitive environment.
  • In house CI expertise enabling further sustainability for overall costs, efficiency, capacity and guaranteeing the quality of parts.
  • Subtractive and additive machining of 3D printed parts (polymer and metal powder) transforming traditional subtractive machining fixturing methods.
  • Increasing efficiencies and reducing the weight of assembles drastically via 3D polymer additive which in turn reduces the cost of delivery.
  • Digital material handling processes enabling organisation of material locations within a few clicks of a button.

Continual Improvement

Here at SPE Continual Improvement (CI) is a foundation activity which receives our constant focus. This approach is deployed by closely monitoring the performance of people, cost, productivity, processes and plant.

Recent Impacts & Benefits achieved using CI approaches at SPE include:
  • Improving inspection throughput by almost 50%, reducing waiting time by c.30hrs p/m (measured over the last six months)
  • Integrating shop floor data collection (SFDC) with Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) techniques to give real time performance monitoring
  • Refining daily boardwalks to measure each ‘pulse point of the business’ against a daily £ target, with am and pm reviews used to identify inefficiencies and engage the workforce.
  • Developing a bespoke ‘Heat Map’ tool for our MRP with load ‘vs’ capacity functionality which is industry leading for real time resource planning and inventory reporting
  • Reducing tooling spend by almost 4%

  • Improving Works Order on time in full (OTFI) launching from c.70% to 91%

CI Case Study

Objective At SPE we like to challenge the norm to improve processes and ways of manufacture. We take huge pride in facilitating smarter ways of working, reducing bottlenecks and finding ways for components to move through the business more efficiently. This approach helps also helps release more capacity improving overall throughput for the benefit of […]

WHA Subsea Installation Cover

SPE were approached by our customer to help design an installation cover to protect delicate electrical equipment during installation. The team needed to design something big enough to fit around the equipment therefore manufacturing the structure in different segments due to the sheer size and for ease of installation. Printed on our WASP 3MT HDP machines, the cover is printed from 10 segments that fix together in sequence and is 1600mm diameter and 1800mm tall.
